Quick Links Sport Person Of The Year (2008)

Marc on duty For the second year in a row, Marc Heinig was once again voted the sport person of the year. The announcement was made at the annual banquet in November. Unlike in previous years, there was no need for the usual ballots as Marc was the clear winner in this category.

As VP of Racing, Marc went above and beyond the call of duty to ensure a successfull racing season for the past two years. Not only was Marc instrumental in the planning of the racing events, he executed as well to ensure that racing equiptment moved from one event to the other, and always filling in when a volunteer is unable to fulfill their obligation.

Tribute to Marc
After years of cycling solo and the exposure of the 1996 Olympic Games, Marc decided to seek out being part of a cycling club atmosphere. The then BCC President, Bob Ormerod, encouraged him to give the Brampton club a try. He did his first TT using an heavy steel frame road bike, 10-speed complete with kick-stand and slip-in pedals and no aero-bars. In 1997, He was introduced to J.P. Tesolin at Re-My Sport, where he bought his Cannondale, which has served him well ever since. Marc at the banquet

Over the years He managed to be the Most Consecutive Rider for eight consecutive years, while one year achieving the bronze medal in the Most Improved Rider 40 km TT event, and in his last two seasons as a senior club racer winning the gold medal before collecting the silver medal in his first season as a Veteran A club racer.

Marc has always helped the BCC Executives with club racing events, and with the urging of Ted Webb, he seized the opportunity to give a little more back to the club that has been providing him with the camaraderie for over a decade now, by taking on the role as the club Secretary. After two years in this role, he served a season as Pierre Dussault’s racing assistant, before taking over the VP Racing position itself for the past two seasons.

Some of the achievements he was proud to introduce into the BCC racing program are:
  • The equalization of all the awards for the ladies’ program to match those offered to the men
  • Hosting an OCA approved citizens road race
  • Hosting an OCA sanctioned criterium
  • Evolving the club TT’s into a separate awards points series
  • Starting up a series of club sprints (as requested by members)
  • Creating an inaugural BCC racing team in 2008

Well done Marc, you have really done well for the club and your self. It was certainly great working with you over the past two years and the club will forever be greatful for your dedication and contributions. This is what Marc had to say about his achievements:

Many thanks again go out to all the volunteers who lent their assistance to our events. In particular, I’d like to thank the various members of the club Executive, with whom it has been a pleasure to work, and the four other members of the Racing Committee, Thomas Bruck, Pierre Dussault, Mike Hudson, and especially George Shepperdley (who contributed countless hours of expertise when I could not devote the time). Further gratitude goes out to Don Krueger for his valuable input leading to the current point system for TT’s (adopted from the Ontario Masters CA) and new course scouting and introducing us to the World Masters TT Challenge. Additional thanks also to Chris Spalding and Joel Cash for their suggestions to improve the system scheduling and make the age-handicapping system more equitable. I look forward to continue cycling in the friendly atmosphere that the BCC offers.
