Bike Handling Skills & Clinics

As cyclists, we are vulnerable to many hazards unique to our pastime while using public roads. This section of our website provides some helpful advice on how to develop skills that will help you minimize risk and stay safe when hazards arise.

First, we suggest that you attend some of BCC’s skills clinics:

  • BCC’s Group Riding Clinic is held on occasional Sunday mornings, and teaches new members the basics of riding safely in a pack, and how to perform group manoeuvres such as rotation. For details, see Group Riding Clinics.

  • BCC’s Bike Handling Skills Clinic is held once or twice a year on a Sunday morning. This 2-hour session provides techniques for improving your bike handling skills, and allows you to practice executing some emergency manoeuvres. For details, dates and times for these Skills Clinics, refer to the BCC Events Calendar and the Touring Schedule.
It is inevitable that at some point you will need to execute an emergency manoeuvre while out riding – due to a pothole that you didn’t see until the last minute, a vehicle turning across your path, etc. Below we have suggested 10 bike handling techniques and skills that can help you in such circumstances. These skills are covered in our Skills Clinics, but you can also read about them here.

A word of caution: if you wish to learn or brush up on any of these techniques you should do so in a location off of the public roads and away from all traffic. It’s preferable to find a soft surface to practice on, and always wear your helmet and gloves. The Brampton Cycling Club accepts no liability for any injuries or damage sustained during such exercises.
