Paul O'Hara-Hoke
Paul O’Hara-Hoke has been an avid cyclist since the age of 14 and a club member since 2006. Now age 41 he focuses his love for cycling in ways that help others. Namely participating in the 4-day 850+km Tour For Kids event run by the Coast to Coast Against Cancer Foundation which focuses on helping children living with and beyond cancer.

Though he has participated in other charity-based cycling events such as the MS Ride, Paul began riding in the Tour For Kids in 2007 for Amelia Canning, 5-year old daughter of close friends Gord, Wanda and sister Sky. Amelia had fallen ill with brain stem cancer in August 2006 and fought the disease valiantly. She was all about the living of life and became known by friends and family as “Amazing Amelia” because she never gave up and had an indomitable spirit through it all. Though she won every battle Amelia eventually lost her fight with cancer in January of 2007, this was the catalyst that formed Team Amazing Amelia. team amelia

Team Amazing Amelia started off in 2007 with just Paul riding along with many supporters. In 2008 it grew to 14 riders, many of which are also BCC members like; Orrie Johnston, Clair Cafaro, Fred Johnson, Roxanne White, Christina Aykler, Remy Wetherup, Peter & Mary Ellen Riley, Fil Carneval, Wayne Eaves and Nigel Clements. Going into its third year Team Amazing Amelia continues to grow and has helped send more than 40 children to camp by raising over $30,000. For 2009 the team is aiming its sights at participating in both the Ontario Tour For Kids and the Alberta Tour For Kids. The later of which goes through parts of the Rockies!

When asked why he does this Paul will tell you that
“We ride for Amelia and all of the children like her - because they need our help and because we can”.

Here is what some of Paul's team members had to say when asked the following questions...
Why did you join Team Amelia and ride the T4K?
What does the ride mean to you?
How satisfied were you with last year's experience?
Would you do it all again this year?
Remy Orrie
Team Amelia has been a fantastic central focus to train & work towards the TFK. It's given me opportunities to meet new people, ride with new people & experience new things. I rode more this past year then I did the last 2 years.

I haven't been personally affected by cancer. But, seeing the kids after the rides, hearing their stories & how much the camps have affected them is truly inspiring. You can't help but feal affected.

Great experience. Great to have familiar friends to ride with & hang out at the end of the day.

I wasn't going to do the tour next year. However after hearing the last dedication on the last day I was truly moved. Every dollar that I raise is on dollar more that can help a kid. If that single dollar can bring a smile to a child's face
When I first joined Team Amelia, I was simply looking for a cycling challenge/adventure. I had ridden "Rideau Lakes" previously and knew I could manage 2 very long days and I wanted to see if I could manage 4. I knew doing it in the company of friends, as a team, would be more satisfying for me. I had no idea that this simple physical challenge could become so emotional and rewarding, that it could change me.

The T4K ride is an opportunity for everyone. An opportunity to see what you are make of and how you can help others make the same discovery. It's also an opportunity to learn about others, their needs, suffering, their personal challenges, failures and great rewards. The T4K ride isn't just a ride, it's a life changing adventure.

The 2008 T4K was my first of hopefully a string of many more, as long as my health will permit. The total experience of the event: anticipation, planning, team building, training, funds raising, the 4 days of incredible riding and celebration, the chance to meet people/families who have benefited from your efforts and are making similar efforts for others, and the huge overwhelming feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment: these make a life changing experience.

Definitely yes, I am planning on riding the Alberta event (3 days in July) as well as the Ontario event this year (4 days in August). It's a huge opportunity to give back and receive at the same time. It's an eye opener, a mind, body and soul expander all in one.
