START/FINISH @ Mayfield Community Centre – Mayfield & Bramalea Rd
The objectives of a Reliability Ride:
1. To be self-reliant 2. To be able to navigate via route instructions (cue sheets) 3. To accomplish the chosen distance at a ‘Touring’ pace and complete within the allotted time comfortably. IT IS NOT A RACE! 4. To be able to handle all reasonable mechanical problems. 5. To be able to handle all weather conditions (Event would be cancelled if forecast indicates really bad weather for the day).Alternate date:-Sun Aug 29
Rules: 1. Two routes will be offered -135km (8 hrs. to complete) Start 8am -200km (12 hrs to complete) Start 7am 2. Each event will allow ½ hr. sign-in flexibility in the start times (ie 7am – 7.30am 8am-8.30am) No sign-in allowed after the ‘flexibility window’. 3. Each participant will be given a start time at sign-in and this will be marked on his/her card. 4. There will be control points at various intervals along the route as indicated on the cue sheets. There may also be ‘hidden’ controls. Each rider will be responsible for getting their card marked at each control. Control opening/closing times will be indicated on the control cards. In most cases controls will be at suitable refreshment stops. 5. Route will not be published prior to event. 6. Pre-registration is recommended as this will help avoid any delays at the start. Send an email to Wayne Eaves touring@bramptoncyclingclub.com to pre-register for event. Participation is open to all BCC members at no cost & also to other cyclists that are OCA members ($10 event fee for non-BCC members). Non-BCC members must show their OCA cards at start of event. 7. No GPS allowed. 8. Group riding is permitted, however correct navigation is each participants responsibility. 9. Certificates will be awarded to all successful participants 10. Refreshments will be provided at the finish
Some suggestions for making the event an enjoyable experience.
1. PACE YOURSELF! This should be obvious to all experienced club cyclists, However if you are attempting a longer distance than you normally would (especially the 200km) just keep your pace controlled and take rest stops when needed - above all fuel and hydrate properly! 2. We strongly suggest you carry a map that will cover the entire routes. South – Central Ontario by Map Art is a good one. 3. The event marshall will have a cell phone number available should anyone get into any unforeseen difficulty – we don’t want to have to call out the tracking dogs! 4. Ensure bicycle is in good working order and carry adequate tool-kit. 5. Make note of your computer vs.the cue sheet km’s and compensate accordingly
Reminder to pre-register for this event with me so that enough materials are prepared for the ride (cue sheets, control cards, etc).
This is an exciting new type of ride for BCC & modeled after format of a Randonneur ride....I am sure that most members will find this event challenging & fun! The selected routes are very good with new roads & scenery for most members. They have been test driven & cycled to record correct cue sheet distances & ensure that the roads are in good condition.
On behalf of all the riders, I would like to THANK Roger, Wayne, Don, George, Tina and John for all their efforts. It was an amazing day and a great experience - I hope the ride is conducted again next year. Many new roads and the company made this a great end to a good weekend for the members of BCC.
Best ride ever! Spending 8 hours in the saddle with "Team 200" was fabulous. Thanks to Roger, Wayne, Pete and everyone else who was involved with the organizing.
Thanks for all the support from all the volunteers (Roger, Pete, John B, Don B, George, Bob & Tina) that were instrumental in making our 1st ever club Reliability ride a success! Also thanks for all the 26 participant members that cycled the 2 different routes (135 km & 200 km). Based on feedback appears that there were a lot of different experiences gained without the support of a tour leader on a conventional ride: - new roads - largest ride ever for many members - navigation - flats - taking shelter during a severe thunderstorm - chasing after a lost cue sheet blown away by wind
We will look at planning another Reliability ride next season based on the success of this event.
I want to echo the comments of Brad and Beth, - great ride, fantastic experience, - high marks to the organizers. This was truly a memorable day.
Plus I'd like to add my thanks to the team 200 riders who were super to ride with, plus a special thanks to those that kept helping me pull back to the pack, -
Great job guys, I certainly hope we'll do it again next year.
